When Google stopped allowing Home Based Business owners to use a P.O. address for a Google Maps listing last year, there was a huge revolt. Many business owners did not want their home address placed in Google Maps for safety and security reasons.
It took Google a while to respond, but respond they did. Since March of this year Small Business Owners can now indicate their service area, rather than their home address, in their Google Maps Listings. There is also a choice to list your distance from a certain location, for example, Riverside, CA, 20 miles from I -10 rather than indicating something such as 'Riverside Couunty'.
Worth noting is that while there were some early reports that taking your address off your listing caused ranking drops, that seems to have been an unrelated bug that Google is working on. So, small business owners can switch over without fear.
