Home Based Workers, How Do You Prove Yourselves as Professionals?
The jobs of transcriptionists, virtual assistant, and travel agent all fall under a general category of people who can telecommute to assist large companies or corporations in smaller, but equally important jobs. Transcriptionists type out details of medical check ups, surgeries, or even legal proceedings. A virtual assistant acts like a secretary from afar by conducting offshore business for a client who does not wish to spend so much on travel, but who nevertheless needs a network of contacts in a foreign country or specific region. Travel agents can book flights or tours by simply using the Internet and a phone line.

If you are planning to take on any of these careers, make a name for yourself by setting up a professional looking website. Show your resume, and highlight qualities or qualifications that fit you best for the job. A professionally designed, easily navigable website can build trust in you immediately. Include all your contact emails, and check your mailbox regularly, so that you can cater to clients' needs immediately.

Before you even get your first job, practice the craft. Buy dictation tapes of legal or medical proceedings, and practice typing the proceedings out. Do as much research as you can on legal and medical jargon. Learn about the intricacies of airline bookings, and learn how to recommend flights and tours. Practice your skills as an assistant on close friends by offering to conduct searches for them on online search engines.

All these practice sessions will help you anticipate problems that you may have when you finally get the job. If you are proactive, you will constantly be on your toes and think critically - these are qualities that even the most austere bosses will appreciate.

Web content writers and web designers fall under the creative category, since their work will require personal input. If you are considering any of these two careers, then you will also need to put up your own professionally designed website. If you are a content writer, then provide samples of your articles. If you are a web designer, provide links to websites you have designed, and make sure that your website is always up and running. Nothing can turn clients away faster than a website designer who cannot practice what he or she preaches.

Creative work-at-home careers require practice. If you are a writer, look for sample subjects on the Internet on which you can try your skills. If you are a web designer, do experiments with your scripts. Attend as many workshops as you can in order to improve your craft and know the pulse of your market.

Learn more about what outsourcing is doing to benefit those who want to work at home. Join associations, such as the International Virtual Assistants Association, to increase your credibility. Working at home can be easy only if you earn the trust of your employers.
