Consider installing sound proofing and curtains.
Is your home-based business located in an area in your house facing the street or a nosy neighbor? Nothing confounds the problem of a lack of privacy in a home-based business than distractions and people who snoop.
To avoid this, make sure you protect your business by installing privacy barriers. Don't want your next door neighbors to hear your business transactions? Use sound
proofing for your walls and windows or install heavy curtains. Use heavy window shades to protect your home office from being spied on by neighbors and passers-by.
Show documents only on a need-to-know basis.
Avoid privacy problems in your home-based business by ensuring that documents such as designs, drawings, plans, write-ups, proposals, financial results and other such stuff are only shown to people who truly need to see them. These include your clients, business partners, your accountant, the IRS, etc.
Don't show private materials to people who have no business with them. If they understand what you're doing, you're more likely to keep your home-based business safe.
Come to an understanding with your family.
Probably the first group of people who will feel alienated by your privacy problems is your family. This is a common concern in running a home-based business. To avoid this, make sure your family understands what you want to do and how you want it to happen.
Compromise, negotiate but make sure they are within reasonable bounds. You may have a business to protect but you also have a family you need to care for. Present your home business privacy requirements and then ask your family for suggestions. If the solution you come up with is a product of negotiation, the easier it will be to implement and follow.
