Idea of the Week: Music Lessons Home Based Business
How to Start up a Home Based Music Tutoring Business

Legalities - Even if you're working from home, you still need to register your business properly. But don't worry too much about legal fees because your home-based business will be rewarded with various tax incentives. Make sure you obtain the necessary permission from local or residential authorities to work as a music tutor from your home.

Creating Your Studio - Teaching a person how to play a musical instrument is different from tutoring someone on his academics. It's much more intimate and requires greater privacy. It would be better if you can find a private room that could work as your studio during the hours you'll need one.

The required room size will depend on how many students you intend to take per class and what kind of musical instrument you're teaching. Obviously, holding classes for more than three students and teaching drums would need a bigger room than when you're giving one-on-one violin lessons.

Soundproof your walls as much as possible. No matter how understanding family members and neighbors are, it's better not to give them a reason to complain about your work.

Equipment and Materials - A musical stand is necessary, but buy two if you wish to perform Duetslinks with your students. A table with a compartment to keep writing supplies and materials may be necessary if you wish to teach musical concepts and theories as well. At least two chairs are needed for you and your student to remain comfortable. A computer and the necessary software tools may also be necessary if you intend to digitally record and edit your student's work.

As for teaching materials, you can ask your student to bring them or charge them for the copies you make.

Accounting - Music may be an art, but tutoring is a business. Download a free accounting application if you need help with your bookkeeping. Keep track of your income and expenses if you wish for your business to flourish!
