English is still the universal language, no matter what computer aficionados and musicians will tell you. As businesses expand, grow, and extend overseas; as the Internet widens its reach to accommodate the needs and whims of even more people; and as interactivity and communication are further increased with the influx of portable handheld devices, the universal language will find even wider use.

Not all people, however, are skilled in speaking, writing, or even understanding English, which is why good English teachers are always in great demand. And as the influx of non-English speaking immigrants into English-speaking countries continues, more and more people will need English tutorial services. Foreign exchange students, in particular, need to study conversational English in order to simply get by in school.

You do not need to be an English major to teach good English. You can have a background in science, engineering, computers, or medicine, and you can still be skilled in conversational English well enough to have the patience to teach it. So if you are interested in making a business of your English teaching skills, then go ahead and start your business!

It can be tempting to join a review center, or to look for a teaching position at your local university or college. However, you can be paid much less than you are worth, and you might be asked to do jobs on the side that might not be on your contract. If you want to make your earnings and time totally your own, then consider teaching English online at home, and turning your English teaching skills into your home business. This way, all your earnings are yours, and you have full control over the students that you want to accept, and the hours that you can teach.
