Managing a Home Based Business and Your Kids
Many parents turn to running a home business because they want to have the best of both worlds: earning money while spending time at home with the kids. The earning money part of the deal can be difficult to come by: you need the best market research, an open market, a great product or service, great marketing staff, and great management skills in order to get your home business off the ground and running for a long time.

The spending time at home with the kids part of the home business deal is both boon and bane to home business owners. True, because home businesses don't demand that you report at work for a certain duration of time, your time is entirely yours, and you can spend your time bringing your kids to school, taking them home, and helping them with their homework. However, younger children are not so easy to manage: they can scatter your paper, run around the house like little hurricanes, and scatter your home business to bits if you don't give them enough attention.

If you are thinking of putting up a home business, but have young children to take care of, you might want to hire a babysitter to look after them when your business is at its busiest. For instance, if you are a stay at home editor, you need a lot of quiet time to be alone with your work. A babysitter can give you a respite from the noise by taking your child to the park or playground. You can even hire a nanny to help you clear up the house and take care of your child while you tend to your home business. In short, accept help whenever you can so that your home business can grow well enough for you to truly spend time with your kids one day.

Coordinate with your spouse on how you can juggle the work between you. Many parents opt to leave their jobs as both spouses organize their home business. For instance, a writer mom can team up with a web designer dad to create a journalism website where people can buy articles and get writing advice for a fee. Because both husband and wife are in the home business, there will be times that only the wife is busy while the husband is not; and there will be times when the husband is busy while the wife is not. With the tasks split, there will be at least one parent taking care of the kids and seeing to it that the house does not burn down.

Other options include summer camps, of course, during summers and learning how to keep kids busy.
