Pros and Cons of Working at Home

What are the advantages of working at home?
• A home-based business will have lower operation costs versus its brick-and-mortar counterpart. This is because overhead costs and office rentals may be bypassed. If you are constructing an office in your home, however, you may spend more than if you would simply set a computer, Internet connection, and time aside to tend to your home business.
• If you have many responsibilities aside from work, or if you find office work too routinary or stressful for your health, then a home business can work to your advantage. It can give you more free time, to tend to the children, clean the house, or simply catch up on all the hours of sleep you lost. This free time, in fact, can make you work better, as you will feel rejuvenated and refreshed more frequently.
• Working at home, without a boss to dictate on you, or schedules to impinge on your health and lifestyle, can allow you to work at your own rate. You dictate the pace of your projects and follow your own rules. With focus on your needs as a worker, you will know how to negotiate deadlines and rates better.
• Working in the big city can cause problems for those who want to live in the suburbs: either the commute can be rough, or gas prices can be high for those who want to drive. Home-based businesses can do away with the need to travel to work, and can save both time and money for those who want to earn from morning till night without the hassle of getting on the subway, finding a train, getting a ride, or spending on fuel. Home-based businesses, therefore, are also ideal for disabled people, or those who have a difficulty walking or standing for long periods of time.
• Some people may find it harder to produce output while in an office setting. This may be due to certain personal preferences, or psychological reasons. Whatever the case, a home-based business can be ideal for those who are not comfortable working before a desk, or in a cubicle.
Working at home, however, also has its own disadvantages.
• Unlike office work, home business income will arrive only when demands and clients are high. You may work for hours without being paid, or have your paycheck arrive weeks after you have completed a job. This uncertainty and instability may force you to take more than one home business offer in order to earn money constantly.
• Some home business offers on the Internet will have hidden costs, such as membership, consultation, and set up fees. Some companies will even require you to use your own funds to post advertisements, make photocopies of brochures, or get the marketing machinery working.
• The rising popularity of home business ventures, moreover, has spawned scams. A home business scam will often advertise itself using overblown terms, and by promising high income for menial jobs done in a short time. Scam home business offers will also require that you pay relatively exorbitant fees to start up a business that appears to have low demand. If you are required to recruit people, as in a pyramid scheme, then you are most likely being offered a scam.
If you are interested nevertheless in pursuing a home business, then make your business plan ready and identify your target market. Work out your budget as you determine exactly what products you will sell, and price your products and services so that you can make your return on your investment sooner. Work with the local offices of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Internal Revenue Service, and United States Postal Inspection Service to keep your venture legitimate. If you are suspicious about home business offers, consult with the local offices of the Better Business Bureau, state Attorney General, and consumer protection agency.
A home business can be costly to start, but profitable if you handle your accounts, market your products and services, and open your business to innovation. If you manage your funds carefully, and remain vigilant about scams, you can earn money in your free time and enjoy the advantages offered by a home business.
