Here are the top 10 invoicing software, programs, and applications in no particular order.
SimplifyThis - It's a web-based application that even novices won't have a hard time using. Individuals can make use of their 30-day free trial offer to explore their paid packages.
Quickbooks- One of the most popular invoicing programs available today, QuickBooks is the answer to business owners' needs for advanced bookkeeping and invoicing options. Not only that but unlike other accounting software tools, Quickbooks gives you a wide degree of control over your inventory. In fact, manual inventory becomes completely unnecessary once you've got your Quickbooks up and running from your computer. Basic package costs $799.95 while Quickbooks Pro is priced at $1,049.95
Side Job Track - This program is a combination of project management and accounting tools. It is best suited to freelancers or professionals and individuals who offer certain services on the side. It works better for individual users involved with multiple projects than for team members working on a single project.
Side Job Track lets you compute your sales invoices, gather client data, create annual financial reports, and organize your projects with its calendar feature. And the best thing about Side Job Track is that it's completely free!
Billable - This program is only for Mac users and sold at $35 with a free 30-day trial. It lets you compute rates for time-based services with programmable time spans and quantity-based services for single or multiple items, view time progress of a particular service, create invoices according to your preferences and in PDF format, add special taxes to invoices for international clients, and update your software with the latest releases from the official website.
The most recent version from Billable offers new features like creating service descriptions, integrating operations through AppleScript, new visual calendar popups, and easier control over invoice creation and sending.
Invoice Place - This basic accounting tool offers free and paid accounts. Free accounts let you entertain a maximum of three customers while its most advanced package, with a monthly fee of just $32, lets you handle as much as five hundred clients. Invoice Place allows you to customize your invoices to accommodate discounts, partial payments, taxable and non-taxable prices, different currencies as well as postage and handling. Invoice Place is best for working professionals and small business owners.
Less Accounting - If what you're really after is an accounting tool that will make computing your earnings and expenses the easiest way possible then Less Accounting may just be what you need.
With Less Accounting, you can collect data about your clients, employees (freelance or permanent) and suppliers and integrate them with other functions of the program. You can also track paid and unpaid fees, manage projects and assign them to individuals listed in your contact records, send project proposals, track mileage for your business' vehicle, create simple financial reports to know if you're earning for the year, and of course create and send invoices.
Less Accounting offers a free account but limits sent invoices, mileage logs, deposits, expenses, and proposals to just five per month. Paid accounts are priced at only $19.95 monthly and allow you unlimited use of their features. You can also take advantage of their 30-day free monthly trial.
Billing Orchard - It offers automated scheduled invoicing and recurring billing, computation for time-based services, Authorize.net and PayPal integration, and client mailing list. There's a free 15-day trial offer for its paid account. Monthly fees are only $14.95 but you'll have to pay extra for special features like help desk and support ticketing system.
Cashboard - It's a simple software-based solution to your invoicing needs. Plans range from free to monthly fees reaching up to $90. Free accounts are limited to two active projects, clients, staffers, but with unlimited invoicing.
Freshbooks - Easily as popular as Quickbooks, this software tool helps you create, manage, and send invoices in a jiffy, accept payments from various handlers, create financial reports, and track work hours. Free accounts will allow you to handle three clients, 1 other person accessing your account, and with unlimited invoicing. It also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee trial period.
Blinksale - Manage your business' needs in a blink with this software tool. A free account will let you handle unlimited number of clients but only three invoices per month. I know there are many options but I thought I would share with you one software that really has helped my company save time invoicing its customer...
http://www.positiveware.com
They combine budget, time, project and billing management into one easy interface. The customer service is second to none and they really get you going on the program. I recommend it to any business who hassles with billing.

We use Bionic Books (http://www.bionicbooks.com)
which is good (although it is more small business accounting than just invoice management).

I did use quickbooks for sometime. Found the application to be very slow. I haven't used freshbooks but heard a lot about it. I am presently using invoicera.com and very pleased with the product. Their customer support is very good.

I recently gave a try on CurdBee (http://curdbee.com).
It's simply useful for a freelancer like me and most importantly it's FREE edition, which allows unlimited invoices to any number of clients was more than enough for my work

I am trying to find a low-cost solution to my problem here. I have 3 restaurants (chain store) that also handle catering (not buffet setups, just the food delivered to your office). No need to track inventory, no time billing. Needing something that all 3 stores (and myself) can log into at the same time (and share the customer list/info) to generate the invoices. Customizable invoices a definite plus. Needing capability to handle tax-exempt customers (we deal with a lot of medical facilities in our area who are exempt) and I don't want the stores to keep accidentally charging them tax.
Any ideas?? I've been completely stumped. Tried the QuickBooks online Invoice Manager but they did not allow customizable invoices nor did they allow for tax exempt.

Great list but you missed Fanurio.
Fanurio http://www.fanuriotimetracking.com
helps with the less appealing aspects of freelancing like billing and keeping track of time. Itās a useful application, with a user-friendly interface.
