Delay in Payments Making Small Businesses Vulnerable

Delay in Payments Making Small Businesses Vulnerable
© MoneyBlogNewz
Almost 50% of small businesses have to wait a quarter of a year to get payments for services provided.
According to the latest credit survey by ISME, 44% of the small businesses, have to wait for a period, of a minimum of three months, to receive payment. On an average, this wait period is 73 days, whereas for 14 % of the firms, it is a wait of 120 days or more.
Mark Fielding, ISME chief executive, puts the onus of delay in payments, on large enterprise and state agencies.
This data is in sharp contrast, to that of the payment schedule of the Government, which is very prompt, as compared to the payments made to small businesses. 97.5% of the bills of government departments are settled within 15 days.
ISME claims, that this delay in payment, makes the small businesses very vulnerable to dearth of flow of funds. Moreover, as their pool of major clients is few, they do not have the flow of funds, for sustaining the business, in the face of long wait period, for payment.
According to Mr. Fielding, as the small businesses do not receive their payments on time, they fail to pay their supply line, as a result of which, the weakest of these enterprise, drop out of the business and shut down.
